Over years of education research, experts have identified various learning styles, but three main types of learning remain most prevalent to students and teachers today—kinesthetic, visual, and auditory.

Understanding the Different Learning Styles for Kids

Understanding your child’s learning style will allow you to help them study more effectively. As a parent, you will also be able to effectively advocate for your child’s needs in the classroom if you know what they need to perform at their best. Another benefit of knowing your child’s learning style is the ability to determine which types of extracurricular activities they would enjoy the most.

It is important to keep in mind that while it is beneficial to understand how your child enjoys learning by identifying their learning style, it is also worth noting that most people tend to use all these styles of learning depending on the situation.

1. Visual Learner

Visual learners process information as images that communicate significant points, provide reasoning, and demonstrate relationships between ideas. Some children might find it easier to recall a vivid image like a graph or map than something someone said or wrote. Visual learners are often observant of the world around them and pay particular attention to art such as illustrations in books. A great way to discover if your child is a visual learner is if they can recognize places you have been to together. Here are a few other characteristics to look for to help identify if your child is a visual learner:

  • They show an interest in art
  • They demonstrate a good sense of direction and an understanding of maps
  • They prefer to watch a video over reading

Once you have identified if your child prefers visual aids when learning, you can support their learning style through various study tips, such as:

  • Colour coding study notes
  • Making concept maps as you study or plan projects
  • Watching documentaries or instructional videos

2. Auditory Learner

Auditory learners understand best by listening to messages. Students who prefer an auditory style of learning demonstrate verbal strengths and follow oral directions well. A child with an auditory learning style will benefit from hearing and reciting information out loud while engaging in discussion to digest new material. Here are a few characteristics to look for when determining if your child is an auditory learner:

  • They enjoy talking and discussions
  • They often sing along to songs or have a keen interest in music
  • They demonstrate an ability to notice sounds that others don’t recognize

Some of our best study tips for supporting a child with an auditory learning style include:

  • Teaching or explaining what they are learning to a friend
  • Asking questions and discussing ideas
  • Recording lessons to listen to later

3. Kinesthetic Learner

The kinesthetic learning style is when you are doing something physical. Many students who prefer this style of learning learn best through a hands-on approach or learning by doing. When learning a physical skill, this type of learning may be required. However, you can also incorporate physical movement into a routine even when what you’re learning is conceptual. Kinesthetic learners may exhibit strengths in sports or other physical activities and usually have a strong sense of balance. Here are a few characteristics of kinesthetic learners to help you identify if your child prefers this learning style:

  • They frequently use gestures when speaking
  • They display good hand-eye coordination
  • They often fidget when sitting down to learn

Here are a few strategies to help support your child if they are a kinesthetic learner:

  • Acting out course content as a skit
  • Using props to solve problems
  • Listening to course content while on a walk
